Here is a lovely meditation practice that I would like to share that may be of benefit to you over the holidays or at any time in your life:
SOHAM MEDITATION:
As you breathe in: repeat to yourself the syllable SO, as you breathe out: repeat to yourself the syllable HAM. SOHAM. It means “I am that”. ‘That’ can refer to any quality or entity that is most meaningful and relevant to you. This can be practiced in survival mode so to speak; for a minute or so to help calm the nerves and ground the mind. Or better yet, you can use this as a meditation practice up to 30 minutes or whatever you have time for. As you practice try to keep your breath calm and easeful and see if you can really keep your mind focused on the sound of the mantra and the movement of your breath.

Because I kno
w that this time of year often brings with it a lot of stress and busyness as well as susceptibility to flus and other bugs, I am running a workshop on “The Art of Rest” at Unity Yoga on the 19th of December. This workshop will focus on healing and relaxing yoga practices such as:
- slow, therapeutic movement to release stress held in the musculo-skeletal tissues
- guided relaxation and meditation practice to generate calm and deep rest
- breathing practices to help increase energy levels / prana
- restorative yoga
I am particularly excited because 50% of the proceeds of this workshop will go to the Cork Simon Community who do such fabulous and much needed work to support the homeless in Cork City. The workshop will run from 10am – 1.30pm and costs E35 or whatever you can afford.
I am also holding a Guided Relaxation for the Immune System class on Friday the 18th of December from 6.30-7.30pm. Again, it will be held at Unity Yoga. The cost is E10 or whatever you can afford.
If you would really like to treat yourself, you might consider attending both. It is certainly my experience that if there is one thing we all need more of these days, it’s good quality rest. The kind that leaves you feeling refreshed, energized and ready to face any kind of situation with resilience. I also firmly believe that stress and fatigue are two enormous contributing factors to lowered immunity and at this time of year with so many bugs going around anything that you can do to help yourself feel stronger and healthier is a great bonus.
